An Incredible Polish Christmas at Caroline Ferriday’s House

What a wonderful time we had today at The Bellamy-Ferriday House in Bethlehem, CT. at the Polish Christmas celebration. Guests toured Caroline Ferriday’s former home and learned about Polish Christmas customs and I signed books in Caroline’s kitchen, the comfiest place in the world. I loved meeting so many Lilac Girls readers and book clubs from all corners of Connecticut and the country. I even got to meet Father Christmas, aka George McNulty, the house site administrator (though, clearly flummoxed at meeting the great man, got my book cover turned around.)

Special thanks to Marzena Chachaj (bottom below) who brought the Polish table to life in Caroline’s dining room and and Holly Baider (left below) who created fabulous flowers and Polish decorations. Together with the amazing Connecticut Landmarks staff, they went above and beyond to transform the house into a Polish wonderland.

Hope we do this every year–it’s such a great way to get in the holiday spirit.

  1. I attended the event in Bethlehem, CT ( I was one of the two crazy ladies giving you he standing ovation in the back row!) and you and the book are wonderful! I purchased three (3) books however I realize that I should have gotten one more signed from you. Is it possible to get another signed copy?

    1. Hi Marge, I think they have them at the house…there are going to be a lot of people there today cleaning up if you want to stop by. I’ll make sure there is one waiting…hard or soft cover? They have both.

p.s. Thank you for the amazing enthusiasm for Lilac Girls!

  2. Hello Martha,

I am an inspring writer. IN fact I am almost done writing a young adult novel. I have put your novel “Lilci Girls” on my amazon wishlist. I look forward to reading it.
I am of polish descent on my mother’s side of the family. Her grandparents were from Poland. And grew up eating a lot of polish food.
Are you doing any events in New Jersey in 2018? I would love to attend one of your book signings.
Hope you have a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season.

    1. Hi Linda,
No events in New Jersey in 2018 but I’ll be sure to get the word out if anything comes up!Hope you enjoy the book–it features lots of Polish customs.

  3. Thank you for all your hard research work in exposing what the people of Poland went thru during WWII…and especially the women of Poland. My family is Polish (my mother’s side) and Czech (my father’s side). And WWII was felt by my family for years after the war ended.

We Poles have so much to be proud of , and you have shown the world what we are about…strong, intelligent women. Thank you again.

  4. Hi, I am a high school student who had read your book and absolutely loved it. I’m doing National History Day, and focusing my project on the Ravensbruck Rabbits and the impact Caroline Ferriday had on their life. I understand you spent quite a while researching for this novel. I was looking for a place to privately email you, but couldn’t seem to find a number anywhere. It would be fantastic if you would be willing to have an email interview; it would greatly benefit the quality of my project. Thanks!
    Hannah
